<p>Abbott talks about this aspect when discussing the difference between story and discourse. Basically, for a close reading, we especially have to pay attention to the (narrative) discourse, recognizing HOW the text is being told and then asking ourselves WHY it is being told in this way--i.e., what the effects of this particular way of telling it are.</p>
